New figures from the Home Office have revealed that Greater Manchester has lost 52 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in the past year alone – a staggering 14% drop. These cuts come despite government promises to boost neighbourhood policing, leaving many local residents feeling vulnerable as crime continues to rise.
In the last ten days alone, we have seen shocking incidents across Cheadle, including an officer being run over, an armed robbery in Gatley, a stabbing in Heald Green, car theft in Bramhall, and increasing anti-social behaviour throughout the constituency. These crimes are not just statistics – they have a real and lasting impact on individuals, families, and local businesses.
PCSOs play a vital role in keeping our communities safe. They provide a visible police presence, build relationships with residents, and help to deter crime before it happens. Yet, under successive Conservative governments, PCSO numbers have been slashed, with over 4,500 lost since 2015. Now, the Labour government’s failure to reverse these cuts is putting people at even greater risk.
Enough is enough. I am standing up for residents in Cheadle and demanding action. I have written to the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, Kate Green, and Chief Constable Stephen Watson, urging them to outline their plans for tackling crime and ensuring our communities receive the policing support they desperately need.
I am also working closely with our local police units, supporting officers on the ground, and pushing for additional resources to help them do their jobs effectively. In Parliament, I am campaigning for greater funding for community policing to ensure that our streets are safe, our neighbourhoods are protected, and residents can feel secure in their own homes.
People in Cheadle should not have to live in fear of rising crime. We need more police officers and PCSOs on our streets, and I will continue to fight to make sure that happens. If you have concerns about crime in your area, please get in touch – together, we can make our community safer.
