MP for Cheadle backs WASPI Campaign in face of Labour betrayal
Tom Morrison, Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle, has pledged to “fight for WASPI women” following the Government’s shocking refusal to compensate those affected by changes to the state pension age.
Data from the House of Commons Library reveals the staggering impact of this decision: 401,530 women in the North West are affected, including 132,960 in Greater Manchester alone with an estimated 5,610 affected women in Cheafle constituency. These women, who were born in the 1950s, have been left devastated by sudden changes to their retirement plans with inadequate notice.
The Government’s refusal to act comes despite backing the WASPI campaign while in opposition, leaving millions of women feeling “betrayed.” The decision also flies in the face of recommendations from the independent Ombudsman, who highlighted the injustices faced by these women.
Commenting on the figures, Tom Morrison MP for Cheadle said: “These shocking numbers reveal the scale of this betrayal. In Cheadle, I’ve met hundreds of women whose lives have been turned upside down by these unfair changes. They worked hard, planned carefully, and were blindsided by this injustice.
“The Government’s refusal to provide fair compensation to these women is simply wrong. The Conservatives created an economic mess, but it’s pensioners who are paying the price. The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for justice for WASPI women in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, and across the country. This shameful decision must be reversed.”
Adding to this momentum, Tom Morrison has sponsored a motion in Parliament to formally recognize the injustices faced by WASPI women. The motion seeks to push the government to address the issue and consider compensatory measures.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for the Government to urgently change course and reconsider this unfair and shameful decision. This isn’t just a matter of policy; it’s about fairness, justice, and standing up for those who were wronged.
