Tom Morrison MP Calls for Leadership on Two-State Solution in Israel-Gaza Debate
On Monday, 16th December 2022, Tom Morrison, Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle, participated in a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament on the ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza. This debate, prompted by a petition signed by over 430,000 people, addressed the urgent need for a resolution to the escalating humanitarian disaster in the region.
During his speech, Tom called on the UK Government to take a leading role in advocating for a two-state solution to the Israel-Gaza conflict. He emphasized that a sustainable and peaceful resolution can only be achieved through the establishment of two secure and viable states, living side by side in peace and mutual recognition.
“All the major parties backed a two-state solution for Palestine in the run-up to the General Election,” Tom stated. “Isn’t it about time that this Government showed leadership on the world stage and formally recognises the state of Palestine straight away.”
Tom challenged the Government on its apparent lack of action in this area, urging it to take bold and proactive steps to reinvigorate the peace process. He highlighted the urgent need for the UK to engage diplomatically and push for meaningful negotiations that address the legitimate aspirations and security concerns of both Israelis and Palestinians.
Advocacy Beyond the Debate
While Tom’s focus during the debate was firmly on the two-state solution, his broader work on the Israel-Gaza conflict reflects his deep commitment to human rights, accountability, and peace. Tom has consistently called for the UK to uphold its international legal obligations and to act as a force for justice and transparency.
He has backed several Early Day Motions (EDMs) in Parliament, including:
- EDM 58: Arms Exports to Israel – Advocating for the full suspension of arms sales to Israel to ensure the UK is not complicit in actions that may contravene international law.
- EDM 11: Peace in Israel and Gaza – Calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and an immediate ceasefire.
- EDMs 207 & 208: Conflict and Peace in the Middle East – Highlighting the need for international cooperation to address the broader challenges in the region.
Additionally, Tom has raised concerns in the House of Commons about the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis, aligning with the Liberal Democrats’ clear stance on this issue:
- Calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to halt the loss of life, ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and prevent further suffering.
- Supporting a full suspension of arms sales to Israel, urging the UK Government to ensure its actions do not contribute to the escalation of violence in the region.
- Pushing for the Oct 7th hostages to be immediately released.
- Advocating for the UK to work with international partners through diplomatic channels to push for a sustainable solution that ensures the safety and dignity of all civilians.
- Committing to de-escalating tensions across the region and protecting the lives of all civilians caught in the conflict.
Standing With the Community
Tom understands the deep concern among his constituents regarding the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in the region. Many families in the Cheadle constituency have loved ones directly impacted by the conflict, and Tom has expressed his solidarity with all those affected. He has assured his constituents that he will continue to advocate for a balanced, humane, and responsible approach by the UK Government.
Committed to Peace and Justice
Tom Morrison remains resolute in his commitment to a peaceful and just resolution to the Israel-Gaza conflict. While his focus in the debate was on the urgent need for progress towards a two-state solution, he continues to champion broader principles of human rights, accountability, and the protection of civilians. He will use his platform in Parliament to push the UK Government to lead on the international stage and take meaningful steps towards achieving lasting peace.
