Gaza destruction

Tom Morrison, Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle, has strongly condemned the horrific killing of 15 humanitarian aid workers in Gaza, whose bodies were discovered handcuffed in a mass grave following an attack by the Israeli Defence Forces. The workers, including members of the Palestine Red Crescent Society, Palestinian Civil Defence, and UNRWA, were carrying out life-saving rescue missions when they were deliberately targeted.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for an independent, prompt, and thorough investigation into these apparent war crimes. In response, Tom Morrison MP has taken swift parliamentary action, tabling an Early Day Motion (EDM) and submitting Written Parliamentary Questions (WPQs) to demand immediate Government intervention.

Tom Morrison’s Parliamentary Actions

  1. Early Day Motion (EDM) – Tom has tabled an EDM in Parliament, urging the UK Government to:
    • Condemn the killing of humanitarian workers.
    • Support an independent investigation into the deaths.
    • Hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
    • Push for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages.
    • Demand an end to the illegal blockade of Gaza.
  2. Written Parliamentary Questions (WPQs) – Tom has also submitted urgent parliamentary questions to the Foreign Secretary, asking:
    • Whether the UK Government has made formal representations to Israel and international bodies regarding the attack.
    • If the UK will support an independent, international investigation into the killings, as called for by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
    • What assessment the UK Government has made of Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law in light of these events.
    • What steps the UK is taking to protect humanitarian workers in conflict zones.
    • Whether the UK will support legal action, including referrals to the International Criminal Court, against those responsible for these violations of international law.

Tom has previously pressed the Government to preserve the ceasfire, pushed back against the awful ‘Trump-Gaza’ calls, called for Palestinian statehood as part of a two-state solution and backed many EDM's and campaigns on Gaza.

The Liberal Democrats’ Stance on Gaza

Tom Morrison and the Liberal Democrats have been consistent in calling for:

  • A ceasefire to end the bloodshed and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
  • The immediate release of all hostages
  • An end to the blockade and urgent humanitarian relief for those suffering.
  • Full accountability for war crimes, ensuring that all parties adhere to international law.
  • The protection of civilians and humanitarian workers, who are being killed in violation of their protected status under international humanitarian law.

Tom Morrison MP: “The UK Government Must Act”

Speaking about the crisis, Tom Morrison MP said:

"The discovery of 15 murdered humanitarian workers in Gaza is utterly shocking and appalling. These were paramedics and rescue personnel who had dedicated their lives to helping others, only to be executed in a grave violation of international law. The UK Government must not stand idly by – we must demand an independent investigation, hold those responsible to account, and ensure that humanitarian workers are protected.

"That is why I have tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament and submitted Written Questions to the Foreign Secretary. The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for justice, accountability, and peace in Gaza."

Tom understands the deep concern among his constituents regarding the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in the region. Many families in the Cheadle constituency have loved ones directly impacted by the conflict, and Tom has expressed his solidarity with all those affected. He has assured his constituents that he will continue to advocate for a balanced, humane, and responsible approach by the UK Government.

Tom Morrison remains resolute in his commitment to a peaceful and just resolution to the Israel-Gaza conflict. He continues to champion broader principles of human rights, accountability, and the protection of civilians. He will use his platform in Parliament to push the UK Government to lead on the international stage and take meaningful steps towards achieving lasting peace.

Take Action

Tom is urging constituents to support his efforts by writing to the Foreign Secretary and the Prime Minister, calling on them to take decisive action.
