Tom Morrison MP has written to Foreign Secretary David Lammy seeking urgent clarification on the UK Government’s stance following the reported breaking of the Israel-Gaza ceasefire. Morrison’s letter highlights inconsistencies between the Foreign Secretary’s response and Number 10’s official position, raising concerns about the UK’s approach to this escalating crisis.

The breaking of the ceasefire has had catastrophic consequences, leading to further violence, civilian casualties, and increased instability in the region. Morrison expressed his deep concern over the humanitarian impact on Palestinian civilians, as well as the ongoing suffering of the remaining hostages still held by Hamas. He made clear that Hamas must immediately and unconditionally release all hostages, whose prolonged captivity has caused unbearable anguish for their families.

Morrison also called on the UK Government to take stronger diplomatic action, urging the immediate implementation of a full arms embargo on Israel to ensure that no UK-supplied weapons contribute to further bloodshed. “The UK must make it clear to the Israeli Government that its military action in Gaza must cease, and that recommitting to the ceasefire is the only viable path towards peace,” Morrison stated.

Beyond the ceasefire, Morrison pressed the Foreign Secretary on the urgent need to reopen humanitarian aid routes into Gaza and restore electricity. “Cutting off aid and power to Gaza is not only immoral but illegal under international law,” he said. “Israel must comply with its legal obligations and allow vital humanitarian assistance to flow freely to those in desperate need.”

The Liberal Democrats have consistently pushed the Government to take stronger action on these issues. During recent debates in Parliament, Lib Dem MPs have called for an unequivocal condemnation of Israel’s blockade on aid and have demanded concrete steps to ensure humanitarian relief reaches those affected.

The conflict in Gaza is part of a broader crisis that also includes rising violence in the West Bank, where illegal settlements continue to expand, further undermining prospects for peace. Morrison reiterated his party’s stance that the UK should sanction extremist Israeli cabinet ministers who have supported illegal settlement expansion and violence against Palestinian communities. He also called for an import ban on goods produced in these settlements.

In his letter, Morrison stressed that securing a renewed ceasefire is a vital step towards restarting meaningful peace talks. “The real victims of this conflict are the ordinary men, women, and children on both sides who simply want to live in security and dignity,” he said. “The UK must do more to push for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders—this remains the only way to achieve lasting peace.”

Morrison concluded by urging the Foreign Secretary to provide clarity on the UK’s position and to ensure the Government is using its influence to bring all parties back to the negotiating table. The Liberal Democrats remain committed to holding the UK Government accountable for its diplomatic response and ensuring that Britain plays a proactive role in securing peace in the region.
